Fossil Oak
The Miocene Epoch existed for 17 million years, ending about 5 million years ago. Both animals and plants were well established and very similar to those presently on earth. By the end of this Epoch the ancient ancestors of humans were well on their evolutionary path. Among the recognizable trees of the Miocene Period were oaks, elms, sycamores, and magnolias.
One of the more beautiful petrified wood pieces of this period is oak. The cross section in this specimen shows beautiful banding of the internal tree rings. Petrified oak is rather scarce and has only been found in jewelry grade examples at a few locations on earth.
